Reflecting on Cultural Differences in Tango
I had an interesting conversation with a fellow dancer from Köln, Germany at milonga El Maipu on Tuesday. We discussed the difference between dancers here in Buenos Aires and back home in Germany. We came to agree that dancers in Buenos Aires dance to enjoy the moment, while dancers back home tend to overthink and worry about the steps they learn, trying to be better than other dancers, and letting the music become just a space filler. This is not unique to Germany, as it could be applied to many other countries as well.
We can't help but wonder why this cultural difference exists. Perhaps we should remind ourselves to embrace the moment and enjoy the dance. We should let the music guide us and allow ourselves to fully immerse in the dance. We shouldn't be too caught up in our heads and overthink our steps.
Let's take this as a reminder to dance with joy and appreciation for the music, the people we meet, and the moments we share on the dance floor. Let's not worry about perfection, but rather enjoy the journey. Of course, this requires a lot of practice on its own.
Enjoy dancing!
